Purpose of Therapy

The essential purpose of therapy is to enable a better understanding and awareness of yourself so that you can make active choices about how you want to live your life.

"Understanding what motivates us, is both the key to unlocking the past and the future."

The reasons why people seek counselling and therapy are varied and complex.  Essentially many people realise that something does not feel that it is working as well as it should.  These profound feelings can have an effect on our relationships and hold us back from accomplishing the things we want.

"Therapy is about exploring why certain thoughts feelings and behaviours get in the way of our well-being and ability to lead a full and satisfying life."

We all have elements of our lives which offer us emotional challenges that we need to overcome.  Mostly, we learn to cope with the ups and downs, but at times it feels that we have run out of options and can no longer rely on our own resources to be able to understand what we feel.  This is something we all face at some time in our lives.  How we deal with it varies, but one way of doing so is through the process of therapy.

Therapy is an active process, to explore and discover the unique elements of your life's experiences and how they have impacted on you.  It is a journey to strengthen your personal knowledge and awareness in order to be able to comprehend more of your motivations, thoughts, actions, perceptions and feelings.  In this way you can broaden your understanding and in doing so, give yourself the chance to repair or change what you do not find helpful.

"If our horizons are opened we have a better chance of seeing beyond what has felt restricting or too difficult to deal with."

People using Counselling and Psychotherapy bring a wide variety of different types of issues and emotional dilemmas.  It might be because of things that occurred in the past or about uncertainties in the future.   There is no right or wrong type of problem, it is more important that you feel the need to attend to something that is troubling you and that you hope to gain insight into.
People come for a wide range of reasons and some of the types of issues that people have found therapy helpful for are:

  • Resolving difficulties with relationships or family concerns
  • Learning to deal with stressful situations
  • Overcoming childhood issues or distressing past life events
  • Dealing with anxiety and depression

"Each person is unique and so are the problems that they have to deal with."
